Investment Giant BlackRock Divests from Leviev’s Africa-Israel Due to Israeli Settlements

Investment Giant BlackRock Divests from Leviev’s Africa-Israel Due to Israeli Settlements

New York, NY, Aug. 25, 2009 – In another stunning blow to Israeli settlement-builder Lev Leviev, the Israeli business magazine Globes Online has reported that BlackRock Inc., one of the world’s largest investment management firms, has divested from Leviev’s Africa-Israel Investments. The Globes article follows a similar report by the Norwegian news service Norwatch. The move comes after a nearly two-year long global boycott campaign of Leviev’s businesses that developed in response to the billionaire’s construction activities in at least four Israeli settlements in the Occupied West Bank, all of which violate international law, and his abusive labor practices in the diamond industry in Angola and Namibia.

In an August 23 article, Globes noted that BlackRock has been under pressure from three Norwegian financial institutions to remove Africa-Israel from its portfolio of funds offered to investors. Globes reports that BlackRock, once the second-largest investor in Africa-Israel, had formerly offered Africa-Israel as an investment in its BlackRock Emerging Europe fund, which the Norwegian banks in turn offered to their clients. The information manager for Skandiabanken, one of the three banks that requested that BlackRock divest from Africa-Israel, is quoted in the Globes article as saying “We have received confirmation that BlackRock that Africa-Israel Investments no longer is part of their portfolio. The confirmation of the divestment was sent to Skandiabanken the day before yesterday on August 18."

BlackRock expects to complete the acquisition of Barclays bank by the end of 2009. Barclays has also been cited as a major owner of Africa-Israel stocks.

The campaign against Leviev, launched in November, 2007 by Adalah-NY, is part of a growing global movement of boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) aimed at stopping Israeli rights violations against Palestinians. Ethan Heitner from Adalah-NY explained, “We are elated at BlackRock’s decision, but expect BlackRock to ensure, as it purchases Barclays, another a major owner of Africa-Israel, that Barclays also divests from Africa-Israel. We call on other businesses with investments in Israel to follow BlackRock in ending their complicity in Israel’s crimes.”

BlackRock’s move comes after the March decision by the government of the United Kingdom to drop plans to move its Tel Aviv embassy into a building owned by Africa-Israel. Leviev has also been renounced by UNICEF and Oxfam, and major Hollywood stars have quietly distanced themselves from the settlement-builder.

In a related development in May, eleven organizations, including organizations from Norway, Palestine, Israel and other countries, along with Adalah-NY, called upon the Norwegian Government Pension Fund to divest from Africa-Israel. The fund is reportedly the fifth-largest shareholder of Africa-Israel. In a May 15th response to Adalah-NY, Aslak Skancke of The Norwegian government Pension Fund’s Council on Ethics noted that the fund is assessing “whether companies in the Fund have activities which can be considered supportive of violations of international humanitarian law. One area of such interest is the construction of various forms of infrastructure in occupied territories.” A decision on the Norwegian government pension fund investment in Africa-Israel is expected in the fall.

Israeli settlements violate international law and cut the West Bank into disconnected Bantustans. Leviev's company Africa-Israel has built housing units on occupied Palestinian land in such settlements as Mattityahu East on the land of the village of Bil’in, and in the settlements of Har Homa and Maale Adumim. Leviev’s company Leader owns and builds settlement homes in the settlement of Zufim on the land of the village of Jayyous.

From WV to WY to You: Tree-sits to halt mountaintop removal in West Virginia

August 25, 2009 - 9:45am

Treesit West Virginia

The tree sitters have refused to come down until blasting ceases above Pettry Bottom, Massey Energy commits to paying the full cost of healthcare and home repair for Pettry Bottom and Peach Tree residents, and the Federal Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement commits to supervising the full reclamation of the blasting mine, which began blasting in the summer of 2008.

Mountaintop removal (MTR) is the destructive and unsustainable practice of surface mining that involves deforesting an area of mountain, then using explosives to blast the rock and subsoil to expose underlying coal seams. Aside from the environmental concerns over burning coal for power, MTR mining flattens and poisons mountain ranges like the Appalachians, devastating the environment and local communities for the benefit of a small number of industrial corporations.

Today’s action is aimed at directly interfering with and shutting down industrial coal mine operations that require mountaintop removal in Appalachia. The MTR site targeted by this action is a predominant coal mine from which Xcel Energy Inc. of Minnesota gets its energy.

Black Thunder, the Thunder Basin Coal Co., LLT, is a Wyoming-based facility that sells coal mined from Pettry Bottom, Peach Tree, and other parts of Central Appalachia to power plants across the country, including Xcel Energy. The coal that feeds Xcel’s power plants in the Twin Cities comes from these mountain communities, which are being blown up in the process of extraction. Anyone who powers their home with Xcel Energy is affected by these actions that target the blasting sites.

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is the governmental agency which claims to oversee and regulate MTR coal mining. In practice the West Virginia DEP (WVDEP) is complicit in the environmental and economic devastation executed by the mining corporations by intentionally overlooking fly-rock problems, not enforcing regulations, and absolving the industry of blame.

Massey Energy and the other industry giants are based outside of West Virginia. The money generated from the large-scale operations does not stay in West Virginia, but is funneled to the headquarters of the corporations.

The residents of Appalachian mountain towns depend on the industrial giants for the dangerous, unstable employment, and our country depends on the industry for our consumptive energy needs. Coal keeps West Virginia poor and the rest of us complacent.

According to a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Administration publication and multiple cases of citizen documentation, fly-rock has been known to land half a mile from blasting sites. Several homes in Pettry Bottom are within a half-mile radius of the permitted blasting area—putting them well within range of fugitive fly-rock and silica-laden dust clouds. Numerous houses in the area have been damaged, run-off has increased, and repertory illnesses have abounded.  A map available fromAurora Lights at http://auroralights.org/map_project/images/maps/hazy/Permitted_MTR_Mines.jpg shows the proximity of homes in Pettry Bottom to blasting on the targeted site.

Mountaintop removal has ravaged the people and land of central and southern Appalachia for years. Over 1,900 miles of headwater streams have been buried, 500 mountains leveled, 1,000,000 acres of land stripped, groundwater contaminated, taxonomical orders of species annihilated, and countless communities displaced.

This is the thirteenth in a series of direct actions and protests since February of this year that have united residents of the area, climate scientists, environmental activists, students, underground miners, veterans, and concerned citizens from across the nation around the goal of ending mountaintop removal.

HANFORD, MERCURY WASTE DUMP OF NATION? 11,000 METRIC TONS

August 22, 2009 - 1:47pm

COMMENT DEADLINE: AUGUST 24, 2009

COMMENT ONLINE: click here

HANFORD IS THE MOST CONTAMINATED SITE IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE, AND THE LARGEST ENVIRONMENTAL CLEAN-UP PROJECT IN THE WORLD.

DOES THIS PLACE NEED YET ANOTHER 'MISSION'?

Hanford covers 586 square miles of desert in eastern Washington. 51 miles of the Columbia River runs through it. It is 35 miles north of the Oregon border, and 215 miles upstream from Portland.

Recommended commentary is that the USDOE TAKE NO ACTION, NOT ACCEPT COMMERCIAL MERCURY WASTE, the army should handle the mercury storage. At the very least, NO MERCURY TO HANFORD.

Occupation Day 12: Negotiations Stop, Rallies to Continue

August 21, 2009 - 11:36pm
Without the deed to the property that she says she's paid for "a million times over," Williams considers the deal unacceptable.  Cheri Honkala called it "really not an offer."  As such, although fears of a raid don't seem to be on people's minds, a 24-hour presence at the home is still being maintained.

In response to the stalled talks - which were, admittedly, an improvement over GMAC's previous position offering $5,000 to end the campaign - PPEHRC and the People's Bailout Coalition are now planning a "major protest" at a different politically advantageous site each week in an attempt to force the issue and keep supporters active.  First up: Mayor RT Rybak's office at 11am on Wednesday (meeting first at the Government Plaza LRT Station on 5th Street).  Beyond that, Honkala hinted at plans to take the fight to Pittsburgh for the upcoming G20 summit resistance (schedule/organizing bodies, latest organizing update), at which an economic justice march has been scheduled for Saturday, September 20 preceding other marches and actions the entire next week, and shortly thereafter to an action in Washington, DC.

Leonard Peltier Denied Parole; Take Action Today!

August 21, 2009 - 4:00pm

"When you begin a great work you can't expect to finish it all at
once; therefore, you and your brothers [and sisters] press on and
let nothing discourage you until you have entirely finished what
you have begun."--Teedyuschung, Delaware

News from North Dakota, today, is that Leonard Peltier's parole has
been denied.  He won't receive another full parole hearing until
2024, at the age of 79 years.

As sad as we all are, we are steadfast, undefeated. We will not
go away.  We will not be quiet.

Take a moment to reflect.  Just a moment.  But then put your
disappointment behind you.  Gather your strength.  There's much
work to be done.

* Action Item 1:  Contact the Attorney General *

On June 23, 1995, Amnesty International submitted a letter of concern
about the Peltier case to the then U.S. Attorney General. There
was no response. Write to Eric Holder, Attorney General. Ask him
to conduct an executive review of the case and to finally right
the wrongs of the past. Tell him it's never too late to find the
truth. Justice delayed is justice denied.

Eric A. Holder, Attorney General
U.S. Department of Justice
950 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20530-0001

Or call the Office of the Attorney General at 202-353-1555.

And while you're at it, ask Mr. Holder why more than 140,000
documents from a 30+-year-old case are still being withheld by the
Federal Bureau of Investigation. Tell him America has a right to
know what occurred over 30 years ago and demand the release of all
documents related to the Peltier case.

* Action Item 2: Contact Members of Congress *

Use all the resources at your disposal to contact your Members of
Congress and continue urging them to support freedom for Leonard
Peltier. That support should be formally expressed in correspondence
to President Obama.

Also demand a full congressional investigation into the Reign of
Terror on the Pine Ridge Reservation during the '70s.  It's long
past time for the truth to be told.  See:

Do you use Twitter?  Try using this service to quickly and easily
reach your Members of Congress: <
http://tcxs.net/>.

You also can sign the petition:

Congress will not be in session for most of August.  This is a good
time to meet with your Members of Congress in their home offices.
Make the appointment now.  You can find locations, telephone numbers,
etc., via our congressional directory:

* Action Item 3:  Call the White House *

Call the White House comment line to express your outrage at the
outcome of the parole hearing.  Demand that President Obama free
Peltier now.  Call:

(202) 456-1111 or (202) 456-1112.

You also can send an e-mail to the White House. Go to
<

If you prefer, mail or fax a letter:

President Barack Obama
The White House

Better yet... Do all three.

Israel declares the shooting of Tristan Anderson to be an "act of war"

August 20, 2009 - 5:01pm

Tristan Anderson

According to Michael Sfard, "if a process by which unarmed civilian demonstration is classified by Israel as an ‘act of war,’ then clearly Israel admits that it is at war with civilians. International law identifies the incident as a clear case of human rights abuse. As such, Tristan and his family are undoubtedly entitled to justice and compensation. We will pursue this matter and take the government of Israel to court. In addition to filing a criminal complaint against the State of Israel for the shooting of their son, the Andersons have submitted a notice of intent to file a civil suit."

Leah Tsemel, the civil suit attorney, stated, "this is another occasion where the Israeli government is alluding responsibility. The demonstrations that take place in Ni’lin and Bil’in are not acts of war. We will pursue, in Israeli courts and international courts if necessary, justice for the Anderson family." Several eye-witnesses have given testimony that Tristan was shot when he could not have been perceived as any threat to the forces in the area. He was shot from around 60 meters while standing with a few internationals and Palestinians, hours after the demonstration had dispersed from the construction site of the Wall. Read more

NYC Garment Workers Challenge Sweatshop Conditions

August 20, 2009 - 8:16am
While it might be surprising to some that sweatshops still exist in the USA in 2009, low-income immigrant workers around the country are all too familiar with the grim reality of long hours, illegally low pay, and abuse from management. While Brandworkers’ Focus on the Food Chain campaign challenges sweatshop conditions in the food industry, our friends at the Ain't I a Woman?! campaign are taking on the garment industry.

The Ain't I a Woman?! campaign is a joint project of the National Mobilization Against Sweatshops and Chinese Staff & Workers Association, two NYC-based workers’ centers. The campaign aims to hold clothing companies accountable for the working conditions in their factories. This task is not always easy given the level of contracting and subcontracting that allows clothing companies to distance themselves from the sweatshops in which their clothes are sewn.

Despite these challenges, NYC garment workers, community members, and activists are organizing for better working conditions and more accountability.

Over 100 garments workers rallied outside Great Wall Corp in Long Island City, Queens last Tuesday. Great Wall is a garment factory and subcontractor for Silver Fashions Inc. Workers say they frequently worked 100 hour weeks for as little as $300 and were even forced to work overnight at the factory (Queens Chronicle).

In November 2008, six workers filed a lawsuit against Great Wall for violating several federal and state labor laws. A month later, the company terminated all the workers who filed suit plus an additional 50 workers.

Protestors Descend on HANO Demanding "Sec. 3 and Sec. 8!"

August 18, 2009 - 5:29pm
July 15, 2009

Organizers of today's action say that HANO is failing to transition low-income families from its “DHAP” (disaster housing voucher program) to its regular Section 8 rental voucher program quick enough to meet the August deadline that the Obama administration has set for the termination of DHAP. They also pointed out many flaws with Section 8, saying that demolition of the city's ~5000 units of project-based public housing after Katrina has led to skyrocketing rental prices and a lack of options for voucher holders. “Section 8 makes you pay for utilities, and it adds complexity to a renters' situation because you're dealing with a landlord and HANO,” explains Sam Jackson of May Day New Orleans. “Straight public housing, when it was well funded and kept up, made everyone's rent lower, and provided needed housing for low-income working families.”

HUD's Section 3 provision was created in 1968 after years of struggle by public housing residents and low-income citizens to guarantee that HUD contracts employ working class families, especially those who live in public housing. It offers job training and hiring, as well as preferences to local small businesses. Post-Katrina New Orleans has seen huge HANO/HUD contracts signed with major politically connected for-profit and non-profit corporations to rebuild demolished sites like CJ Peete and St. Bernard.

“The residents of public housing and other regular folks are losing out doubly with HANO ignoring Sec. 3,” explains Stephanie Mingo, an organizer and resident of the demolished St. Bernard. “HANO isn't enforcing compliance with Section 3 as diligently as they should be. HANO's contractors aren't hiring local people at the levels they could and should.” Ms. Mingo sent a letter to Diane Johnson, HANO's single board member over a month ago posing several questions about compliance and says she has yet to hear a response. She has aired her concerns about Sec. 3 on multiple occasions but, “they're shutting us out,” she says of HANO and its contractors. At today's rally she called on HANO to “prove compliance” by providing hard data on job training, job hiring, and local contracting. HANO's spokesman and counsel Wayne Woods offered sympathetic but vague responses, eventually disappearing into the barricaded HANO building until most of the protestors called it quits in the hot sun.

Last week organizers put together a “job fair” for the work rebuilding St. Bernard and other demolished sites. Hundreds of New Orleanians filled out applications provided by the grassroots organizers who had to make clear that they couldn't promise the jobs themselves, as they were only doing what HUD and HANO have yet to sufficiently do; job outreach. Nevertheless, the applications were handed over to the HANO hiring office.

Organizers say they'll mobilize for Friday's board meeting to demand concrete answers.

TheRedPill

November has been quite a month for change here at Grand Junction Alternative Media (GJAM).  GJAM is the umbrella media group for such projects as The Red Pill, CUNTastic, The Peep Show, Vignettes: Glimpses of Culture, Confluence Books, and more.   At the beginning of this month the collective, after a many month-long process, have changed the name of GJAM to Confluence Media Collective.  CMC will be continuing all of GJAM's media projects, except one, Confluence Books storefront will be closing at the end of November.  We are sad to have to close the storefront, and we are looking into becoming a mobile infoshop to bring radical literature to all the small radical communities around the region.  On Friday 13th of this month CMC held its first Variety Show, highlighting CMC's many artist, writers, and activists. In the coming months look for the variety show to come to a radical community near you soon.

CMC is always looking for new co-conspirators.  Get in touch with us. gjredpill@hotmail.com or visit our website: www.gjredpill.org.  Many of our books, zines, and DVD's are for sale on our website.

Responding to Harmful Government Inaction, Protestors Stop Blasting on Coal River Mountain
1 day 6 hours ago
Anonymous

PETTUS, W. Va. – Early this morning two concerned citizens, Dea Goblirsch and Nick Martin, locked down to a drill rig on Coal River Mountain’s Bee Tree mountaintop removal site, effectively stopping blasting. Two others, Grace Williams and Laura Von Dolen, joined them in direct support, holding a banner with the message “Save Coal River Mountain”.

These nonviolent protestors have taken this action to bring attention to the extreme danger facing residents of the Coal River Valley from blasting near the Brushy Fork Impoundment. They plan to stay locked down until law enforcement removes them.

Resident of Rock Creek, W Va., Delbert Gunnoe, stated his concerns with the blasting, “You know when they put a blast over there, and it shakes the windows over here, at what, ¾-a-mile distance, imagine what it does over there.” Gunnoe continued, “if [the impoundment] did bust…what would be the destruction? The town of Whitesville would no longer exist.”

The four are fearful of the blasting that Massey Energy began in late October. These blasts are 200 feet from the Brushy Fork Impoundment, permitted to hold nine billion gallons of toxic coal slurry. The impoundment sits atop miles of hollow, abounded underground mines, further endangering its integrity. By Massey’s own estimates, roughly 998 people will die should the dam break. The emergency evacuation plan states that a 40-foot wall of sludge, cresting at 72 feet, will flow through the valley, reaching 20-feet-high about 15 miles down the road. Apart from the initial flood, the impact of this potential spill would be felt along the Coal River’s 88 miles.

EVIDENCE THAT UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS WELCOMES FBI INTEL OPERATIONS AGAINST WHISTLEBLOWER

The universities across the nation (and AG) do more for the fbi/cia than assist in the search for foreign terrorists; today our colleges and universities directly encourage their campus police and civilian employees to engage in unlawful intel operations against whistleblower
GERAL SOSBEE.

In November, 2009, the Texas Attorney General (AG) grants near blanket authority (in Case number OR2009-16316 & Case ID#367454) to the University Of Texas Police (UTP) and Harlingen, Texas (HTP) Police to withhold from Open Records (OR) disclosure the key data in their possession relating to Geral Sosbee. The AG also states in each opinion that the AG has no authority beyond the scope of the OR statutes. The AG thus hides from his responsibility as a citizen and human being for civil and human rights violations behind the the OR guidelines ( which are designed to allow the police to engage in witch hunts, stalking, harassment, fraudulent stings and other crimes as I have documented at many pages of www.sosbeevfbi.com.) I have also provided the AG with evidence of ongoing felonies against my person (continuing in Texas and other locations for the past decade); by the AG letters referenced above the fbi now gains the AG approval and authority to use UT employees (including UTP) in efforts to silence or kill me; see for example the specifics of some of my reports at

Dr. Shakur is a New Afrikan (Black) man whose primary work has been in the area of health. He is a doctor of acupuncture and one of the most prolific, committed and conscious freedom fighters and political prisoners to whom the Black liberation struggle has given birth.

Since the age 16, Dr. Shakur has been a part of the New Afrikan
Independence Movement. As a part of this movement Dr. Shakur has been a target of the illegal Counterintelligence Program carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (COINTELPRO). This was a secret police strategy used in the U.S. starting in the 1960's to destroy and neutralize progressive and revolutionary organizations. It is believed that Dr. Shakur's resistance to this program led to his arrest and trial.

Water is essential, in various ways, to all human activity. Water is something that humans, literally, cannot do without. Every human needs water in order live and to have a good life. Societies need water in order to be provide for the survival of their populations. Usable water, as a resource, is finite and distributed unevenly across the planet. Most societies have difficulty providing water to their populations, especially in the Third World. The inability to access water is referred to as the water crisis.

Philip Giraldi on Antiwar.com produced an excellent article on J Street, the new “pro-Israel, pro-peace” alternative to AIPAC, which last month held its inaugural conference in Washington. [“My Problem with J Street,” http://original.antiwar.com/giraldi/2009/10/28/my-problem-with-j-street/]

The organization’s name, J Street, a lettered street which does not exist in Washington, DC, is presumably an effort to identify with K Street, which is considered the central location for lobbying firms in Washington, with the “J” presumably standing for “Jewish,” since “J” is not the only unused letter for Washington street names.

J Street has been excoriated by the neocons and other hardline Zionist rightists as being anti-Israel, while it has been hailed as a great hope for the future by many proponents of a more balanced, less pro-Israel, American policy in the Middle East. Giraldi, however, stands virtually alone in seeing things in a much different light. To him, J Street is “just another Israel advocacy group with a slightly more progressive and politically correct and therefore acceptable message.” In short, with its moderate, pro-peace image, J Street can more effectively promote the policies of the Israeli government, to the detriment of the Palestinians and the United States.
