After failing to prevent fascist neo-Nazi David Irving from holding a public speaking engagement at a restaurant in Arvada as well as allowing “performance artist” Buju Banton to spew homophobic hatred with impunity at a recent show in Denver, Colorado activists and radicals have some explaining to do. Unity is short between fragmented, sparsely attended groups and actions are few and far in between. In times like these, those that espouse theories of direct action and organizing for a better world should be taking advantage of the political climate and mobilizing. As the post-DNC activist vaccum continues to delay serious change, many groups are starting to find a good routine with steady participation, but there are still holes to fill.
Hard economic times breed violent xenophobia and nationalist sentiments. Fascist elements can and will take advantage of this climate, and providing a militant counter in the street to that threat is the only answer. Racists, white supremacists, homophobes, sexists, and fascists should never be given the opportunity to organize publicly. That makes communities unsafe for anyone marginalized by the views of irrational, hateful individuals and groups, and fighting for the physical safety of the marginalized in the face of violent bigots should be a priority for anyone looking to destroy oppression.
By allowing this hate to propagate in the region, anyone in Colorado looking to make positive change has failed. This was because of lack of organization, not willpower. Plenty were interested in countering these events, many of which in a militant fashion, for Colorado has no shortage of determined individuals ready to defend their communities; however because of a complete lack of framework, infrastructure, or even basic social network, much needed mobilizations never occurred.
Whether this is from an ideological splintering or simply laziness from the proverbial “scene” is irrelevant. Folks interested in anti-fascist/racist/sexist/homophobic activity need an outlet to organize. This could easily be a relatively ad-hoc action group centered entirely on self-defense and justifiable militant protest. A wide variety of people are interested in keep hateful, racist and dangerous elements out of their communities, and through anti-fascist actions coalitions could form between groups even differing in ideology. What Colorado needs is a dedicated network of anti-fascists connected with each other and prepared to mobilize against intolerance and violent hatred; prepared to stand their ground, arm and arm, ready to respond to any situation.
Recent disappointments, while disheartening to many waiting for Denver to find it’s bearings in grassroots politics, could be a thing of the past if all some people would do is talk to each other every so often. Allowing such despicable elements into this area is a travesty, and if the interest is there to counter that, hopefully people start getting together and figuring out what it’s going to take for a broad, generalized anti-oppressive movement in this town. No fascists in our town!

I agree that it is good to counter-protest at such events. But "preventing" events or shutting them down is problematic for several reasons. First, it is kind of a violation of the principle of freedom of speech, showing us to be hypocrites. Secondly, there are racists, neo-nazis, and other white extremists in the Denver area. However, in no way would counter-protesting or even shutting down their public events make the community any safer for the marginalized. If not provoke them, at the very least driving them underground does not make them go away. The only real safety would come from serious community-defense organizations. I don't think that we've failed to make change because of David Irving and Buju Banton.

allowing them to organize and get stronger and perhaps eventually get into some sort of power will only prove that now nobody has free speech, especially the marginalized. Why are we granting someone the privilege of free speech if they wouldn't even dream of allowing to give it to us? We are talking about fascists, right?
Isn't an anti-fascist group essentially the root of community defense against these types of boneheads?

I agree. Notions such as "freedom of speech" are essentially liberalism. I would ask "freedom of speech for whom." Already, shock-jock pundits get a national platform to trash "illegal immigrants." We shouldn't allow this widespread sentiment to translate into an organized force locally.
BTW, what happened with Columbus Day. Seems like RAIM was about the only people to show up and oppose the genocide celebration.
COLORADO or Rocky Mountain Anarcho-Federation

We really need a larger federation for our region. That would have an Antifa Working Group, amongst others. We could start to build up a bail fund to get our peeps out of jail, work on annual summits with lots of parties, maybe even a region anarcho-paper.
agreed Rocky Mt. (A)narcho federation needed!

Beyond just militantly confronting them...

... we also need to be organizing within the ranks of those they recruit from. This statement is far off base: "providing a militant counter in the street to that threat is the only answer." I agree with militant confrontations with fascists and their ilk. I'd like to even see people go beyond just shutting down their meetings and events, and start to personally target these organizers where they live and work on a constant basis.
HOWEVER.... this cannot be the only answer. The failure of the left or those that fight against capitalistic and state dominance to actually engage white working class communities has been a main reason that fascist organizing can continue to grow. The more we ignore these communities, or openly turn our backs on them, the more the racist right will be able to recruit from them.
When was the last time anarchists handed out their papers at a NASCAR race as opposed to some liberal anti-war protest? Why do we find more allegiances with upper class white liberals than working and poor white folks that may not have a personalized political identity?
Strategically, white folks in the movement have to step up and organize within white working class communities. Folks of color are in a position where they cannot do most of that organizing. If white folks in the movement want to really work toward ending racism and white supremacy, they will step up to work within the populations that provide the foot soldiers of these movements.
That kind of work is uncomfortable. It's hard. It's even scary and at times intimidating. But it will also have the greatest impact on these organizations. Let's confront them in the streets. Let's confront them at their workplaces and homes. But let's also work to ensure their ranks DO NOT GROW in the first place, and that our ranks grow instead.

is that the answer though

That's great and all but it ignores the structural reason for white supremacy (or liberalism for that matter). Moreover, it's not the first time someone said, "whites should organize white people against racism/ for radicalism, etc." In all they have a really bad track record. It seems like unfocused movementarianism.
Second, i think is missplaces racists as being the foremost target. The minutemen aren't killing Pakistan civilians with drones. Obama is. Crazy racist crackers are not in power. We should be focused mainly on those who are. Anti-racism, in that it focuses on a fringe right, can thus easily become a shill for liberal imperialism.
Third. What is the end goal of anti-racism broadly contstrued? To make blacks and chicanos equally as rich as whites compared to most of the world's people? I really think anti-racism ignores a huge point here.

"oh yeah let's crack the boneheads in the street and forget about organizing against capitalism/the patriarchy/imperialism/etc." This is about community safety. These people are in our neighborhoods already, and now we've allowed them to occupy eateries and concert venues. I agree, we should be attempting to reach out to white working class people as well. We shouldn't forget that race is a social construct, and reaching across those barriers to unite against a common enemy (whether that is neo-Nazis or the State). I would argue that anti-racism's goal isn't to make sure anyone marginalized is as well off as anybody else, but to make sure that organized racially motivated violence is put into check fast and effectively. That means examining the root cause to that violence, which are fascist/neo-Nazi/hate organizing. Countering that with a variety of tactics and strategies (some of which have already been offered by COMIC readers in response to my original article) is something Colorado needs.
I really liked the idea of a strong regional federation perhaps with a newspaper. An anti-fascist working group within that federation seems like the most effective way to make sure people working against fascism have the numbers for safety and the organization to work effectively. I hope everyone from the Rocky Mountain region gets together one of these days to discuss such a federation further.

Former Israeli Minister of Internal Security and Zionist hard-line supporter of genocide of the Palestinian people, Uzi Landau, will be speaking about the supposed threat of Iranian Nuclear Weapons on his first trip to the United States. The speech will be taking place at the University of Colorado at Denver on the Auraria Campus on Wednesday Oct. 28 from 1:30pm - 3:30pm at Saint Cajetan's Church across from the King Building (please come early around 1pm)
For those of you unfamiliar with this war criminal and human rights violator, he was opposed to the 2004 disengagement plan from the Gaza Strip. He encouraged armed resistance by settlers to the plan and was actually banned from traveling abroad by Ariel Sharon due to his extreme views (hard to believe he was too extreme for Sharon). He was also Minister of Internal Security at the time of Rachael Cory's murder by Israeli forces. He was previously sponsored by the Zionist of America in a failed speaking tour and continues to support human rights violations of the Palestinian people.
Please come with signs and a spirit of "vigorous" protest. This should not go un-resisted!!!

I agree we need an anarchist/anti-fascist federation in CO, if only to serve as a networking tool for groups and individuals in the area. And i definitely see the lack of anti-fascist/anti-racist organizing. I've seen and been involved with some great anti-capitalist, anti-prison/prisoner support organizing but i first got involved with ARA in Minnesota over a decade ago and have always felt that Colorado needed a stronger, more visible, and more militant anti-racist/anti-fascist presence. I would love to see these ideas come to fruition. While we need to focus on the roots of racism and white supremecy within the State, we can't ignore the racists in the streets. And we should never let them have the streets.

The problem with dismissing ideas like "freedom of speech" so quickly is this. If we establish the idea that an event can be shut down by force by a group that opposes it, then it means that other groups can come shut down any of our events in the same manner.
I'm not particularly fond of the idea that a bunch of fascist brown-shirts and tea-baggers could come and shutdown any activist speaker that they don't like.
And, if it gets reduced to force versus force and violence versus violence, I'm not really sure the activist community in Denver is strong enough to win that fight. Heck, this whole article was about how its hard to even organize a protest. Could you organize ten to a hundred or more activists needed to defend any event from tea-baggers if they are allowed to come in with violence and try to shut us down?
I've seen counter-protests against the Klan in the south be very effective. One key is size. Size matters! 5 or 10 counter protesters look silly and powerless. 500, 1000 or more don't. I've seen 20 KKK surrounded by 10,000 protesters back just before the Atlanta DNC. Wanna guess who looked ridiculous, silly and powerless in that scene?
Counter protest can be very effective without destroying the principles of freedom that allow and defend our own events. Size matters. It matters when its obvious that the community is coming out and saying no.

"RAIM, others wreck Zionist-led war mongering against Iran
On October 28th, Uzi Landua, a hard-line Zionist and long-time high-ranking official in the Israeli state, spoke at the Auraria campus in Denver. Landau was invited by the Zionist group, the Amerikan-Israeli Student Affairs Committee, to discuss the supposed threat posed by Iran. RAIM had other ideas.
Word about the event reached Denver’s activist community less than two days prior....."

I began working with Colorado Indymedia, partly because I thought it could serve as a deterrance to fascism. But most of the original people have left, and most of those who remain seem uninterested in combatting fascism. I attempted to organize opposition to both David Irving and Buju Banton, but could get no assistance. As I had the fewest resources of anyone on the COIMC staff, I could not do it alone. I have since resigned.
I'm glad to see that someone else is interested in taking up this cause. I suggest you beware of people who see such things as a game. Also, watch out for those who do not live ethically. Even if they are opposed to fascism, they have other agendas and will not help you.
Wow really!
